Another key area for visiting is Lake Titicaca. This lake is the highest inhabited one in the world. Besides visiting a few of the islands here, it is also possible to spend the night with a local family, getting a better feel for what daily life here is like.
Many people choose to go from Lake Titicaca to Arequipa and the Colca Canyon. The canyon is another area that you can trek in while the city is beautiful and has a somewhat European feel to it. From there, one can easily travel to see the mysterious Nazca lines in the desert. Actually, this trip is often done in the reverse order, leaving the most important site, Machu Picchu, for last.
